Creativity is essential to our mental and physical well-being; it transforms lives . We need to express ourselves and also to realise that it isn’t a luxury that is left last on the ‘to do’ list of life.

We must listen to the creativity inside ourselves telling us to create. When we do, we allow emotions to be released and our energy can flow.

Often, we have lost our true selves in life and suddenly turn around to realise we’ve squandered our creative selves by investing heavily in other people, doing what we ‘should’, caring for others or giving our all to work and careers.

Through exploring our own creativity, we can start to feel a sense of calm, come home to ourselves and begin to excavate our buried dreams. In taking a few days away, supported by people who encourage and uplift us, we can open ourselves up to our own creativity.

As someone who has felt this loss of self, and abandoned my own creative pursuits and well-being for many years, my purpose is to help others reconnect, free up, become well, have fun and discover the joy of being creative.

I’ve planned this retreat so that you can experiment with creative pursuits in many forms, such as writing, painting, photography or video. There’s also ample opportunity to be in nature, on your own or with others, if this is what you need to reconnect to your own vision.

The leaders have been carefully chosen to fit with the retreat’s values of kindness, encouragement and support. We’re here to inspire and encourage you from the heart, understanding that you have a unique set of circumstances and needs.

Our days will be spent with a mixture of led discussions and classes encouraging you to free up and enjoy your creative sessions: including photography sessions, painting, journalling and smartphone photography with creative apps.

You have access to Avalon well-being to nourish your body, outdoor swim sessions, and a fire temple experience. This is where creativity meets well-being.

Part of the creativity and well being is eating well and at Utopia we are sure to have nourishing and healthy food for our entire stay. Join us for four nights and three days at Broughton Sanctuary to be inspired and reconnect with yourself.

The 2024 Creative Light Festival is taking place at Broughton Sanctuary in Skipton, Yorkshire, set in 3000 acres and with access to the Avalon Pool Suite. The  Sanctuary is home to a Nature Recovery Project and is a mix of heather moorland, ancient and newly planted woodland, rolling meadow pastures and meandering rivers.

We have been given the opportunity to stay in Broughton Hall and its retreat houses over four nights. With tiered options of accommodation from camping to staying in the historic Broughton Hall itself, which you may have recently seen tv on Gentleman Jack, Ridley Road and All Creatures Great and Small.

What others have said about Creative Light

Another amazing Creative Light Festival surrounded by lovely, inspiring people. Margaret’s ethos and values were evident throughout the weekend which was thoughtfully put together and beautifully delivered by her and her team. I came away with many ideas to pursue. It is a rich experience for anyone wanting to develop their creativity and I thoroughly recommend it. I have already booked for the next two years which says it all!

Three wonderful days of creativity, companionship, connection and inspiration. An experience that lifted my spirits and enriched my soul. A big thank you to Margaret, Lesley and everyone involved.

This was a very special weekend. A large group of creative people came together in a very happy and supportive environment. It was hard to say goodbye

My first Creative Light Festival and hopefully not the last. Don’t worry if you’re a novice in any of the creative arts, like the photography, which I am. I learnt so much, and everyone was so welcoming and supportive. The speakers were so inspirational; and I loved the mix of sessions offered to us. I took so much away and am still taking time to process it all. I have already put so many newly learned skills into practice.

Jane Slaughter

The Creative Light Festival has been full to the brim with walks, talks, hands on learning and so many warm and inspiring people. I have come away with a deep sense of personal wellbeing, not just creatively but mentally and physically too.

Jacqui Turner

Such an inspiring time away at the Creative Light Festival. Great to catch up with other creatives that I met last year and to meet new ones this year. Really inspirational speakers and I so enjoyed the workshops that I attended – which encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. The visit to Loch an Eilein, with all its amazing autumn colours, provided the chance to wander and enjoy the peace and quietness of the woods. Very well organised – Thank you Margaret & your team

Rachel Warfield

What a great weekend. Very inspirational with plenty of time for photography. Spent time with so many creative people. The location was superb

Caroline Briggs

Total immersion into creativity, inspired by genuinely creative people.

Amber Burton

Everything from the stunning location by the waters edge, the warm welcome from yourself and Lesley, the new friends I have made and the inspirational speakers who gave their time to show us their wonderful work (and impart their KIND words). The weekend blew me away and I feel so privileged to have been a part of it. The weekend was busy, but calming and I enjoyed being on my own but surrounded by people. It was the perfect mix – I felt so happy.

It will take time to process all that I saw, felt and heard over the weekend, but my cup is most certainly over-flowing.

This has been the highlight of the second half of the year. Fabulous people, beautiful locations and inspirational stories.
